“Compared to us, the rest are making rags,” Karl Lagerfeld whispered to Valentino Garavani in Valentino: The Last Emperor.

Between finishing Grace, a Memoir yesterday and watching Valentino: The Last Emperor today, I’ve been on somewhat of a fashion history kick this Christmas break. It’s fascinating to learn about how much the industry has changed in (and often because of) a single person’s life. With new business models, new editors, new media and, of course, new designers, one can only wonder how the fashion industry will continue to adapt, grow, and carry on. Will we look back and say that such-and-such decade was the golden age of fashion? Or have we yet to live it?

"Never use the word “cheap”. Today everybody can look chic in inexpensive clothes (the rich buy them too). There is good clothing design on every level today. You can be the chicest thing in the world in a T-shirt and jeans — it’s up to you."

"Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants."
