garance, la mer opale

Vienna City Guide

Ok, finally getting around to doing this properly.

  1. Hotel Daniel - I’ve had breakfast there three times in the last couple of weeks, because even though it’s not exactly cheap (17€), it’s an all-you-can-eat buffet with good quality breakfast food. The whole place is very airy & perfect for Sunday morning really. Especially as you can take a stroll around Belvedere Museum straight afterwards, as it’s right next door.
  2. Belvedere Museum - Some of you might know this place from the movie A Dangerous Method as parts of it where filmed there. It houses the biggest collection of Gustav Klimt paintings.
  3. Orlando di Castello / Ein Wiener Salon - For good food & nice interior.
  4. Cafe Sperl - For a traditional Viennese coffee house.
  5. H&M on the Graben - I’m guessing it’s the most opulent & classiest high street store in the world.
  6. Leopold Museum - Home to the largest Egon Schiele collection.
  7. Albertina / Kunsthistorisches Museum - Worthwhile museums.
  8. Schönbrunn Palace - Like a Mini-Versailles with a labyrinth in its garden etc. For fans of Sissi or Marie Antoinette. This time of year there’s a nice Christmas Market in the evening.

I definitely forgot some places, but this is all I could think of for now.

This bookshop is like 5 minutes away from Shakespeare & Co., but not too many people know about it apparently because while Shakespeare & Co. is completely overrun most of the time, this bookshop isn’t. It’s run by a Canadian guy & they will almost always offer you tea or coffee while browsing, which is lovely. The people there are super friendly & speak both English and French, so don’t hesitate to ask for anything. It’s a really nice alternative to Shakespeare & Co. if you’re looking for used or new books.

Jacques Grange designed this suite with inspiration from Sofia Coppola; its mood is delicate and feminine, with hand-painted frescos evoking a misty summer garden at dawn. A Juliette balcony off the bedroom overlooks the courtyard and the palatial bathroom has a steam shower with a clawfoot bathtub. French doors from the bathroom and bedroom lead to a fully-furnished private terrace that offers a magical view of the garden and fountain.

I’m vacationing in this heavenly place right now & have generally updated very sparsely all summer long, but hopefully I’ll be posting more regularly again once I get home on Friday. Hope you’re all having a lovely summer!
